The Peggy Lee Music Catalog
Original Albums And Official Anthologies
(1948-2022)

SCOPE

This page lists a total of 122 Peggy Lee albums, all of them initially released in the United States or, otherwise, the United Kingdom. (Lee carried out all of her recording activity in those two nations.) Please note that only authorized releases have been counted. In other words, the tally excludes public domain and bootleg items. (Arguable exceptions were made for certain albums containing radio performances, and also in the case of an album released by the Camay label, whose issuing rights were legally disputed at one point in time.)

For our tallying purposes, an album is understood to be a collection of tracks made available in one or more of the following configurations: 78 album, LP, CD, MP3 file, streaming file. None of the lesser formats, such as cassette tape or 8-track cartridge, have been factored into this overview. (Exceptions have been granted in the rare cases of albums which only came out in the form of cassette tapes.)

ORIGINAL ALBUMS

Preceding our 122-item inventory, this pictorial checklist aims at facilitating the reader's assimilation of the vast amount of albums to be itemized. Photography of each album's front cover is on display, along with the album's title and its assigned number. Viewers interested in continuing and expanding on their pictorial exploration should feel free to visit my Peggy Lee bio-discography -- especially, but not exclusively, the main Capitol, Decca, and Late-Period album galleries.

ORIGINAL ALBUMS
(1948-2021)

The first half of this page is dedicated to the original albums of Peggy Lee. The 54 qualifying albums are listed chronologically, by year of release. An original album offers a program of numbers which, for the most part, have not appeared on previous albums. (In contrast, anthologies consist primarily of previously issued numbers. The second half of this page is dedicated to showcasing anthological albums.)

Through this entire inventory, track titles have been listed in the same sequence in which they appear in the albums. (For LPs, the titles on the A side are thus listed first, those on the B side second. For 78 albums, the tracks on the lower-numbered disc are similarly listed first, the tracks on the higher-numbered disc last.) Note also that, wherever a song written or cowritten by Peggy Lee appears, that song has been identified with an asterisk.

Album 1
RENDEZVOUS WITH PEGGY LEE

Release & Recording Notes

Recorded for the Capitol label over three sessions held in mid-November 1947 (except for track #6, recorded with partially different personnel in early December 1947). Originally released in March 1948 as a 78-rpm album (Capitol CC-72), consisting of three discs (#10118 o #10120).

Original Tracks

1. Why Don’t You Do Right / 2. I Can’t Give You Anything But Love (first disc)

3. Them There Eyes / 4. Stormy Weather (second disc)

5. 'Deed I Do / 6. Don’t Smoke In Bed (third disc)

Reissue Notes

Reissued in June 1952 as a 10-inch LP (Capitol H-151). Added tracks:

7. While We're Young (recorded in late November 1947)
8. I Don’t Know Enough About You* (December 1945)

Reissued again in April 1955 as a 12-inch monaural LP (Capitol T-151). Added tracks:

9. Hold Me (recorded as part of the album sessions)
10. Mañana* (late November 1947)
11. Golden Earrings (September 1947)
12. It's A Good Day* (July 1946)

All LP and CD reissues of this album offer the 12 above-listed tracks. Additional tracks
were included only in the unique case of a 1974 reissue of Rendezvous with Peggy Lee
which was not officially acknowledged as such. These are the tracks added to that 1973 Japanese
LP reissue, titled Peggy Lee With Dave Barbour ("Jazz Vocal Best Collection" Series):

13. Everybody Loves Somebody (recorded as part of the album sessions)
14. Sugar (September 1947)
15. Save Your Sorrow For Tomorrow (October 1949)
16. My Man (October 1958)

Additional Reissue Notes

American and British releases are the focus of the present overview. However, allowances have been made for foreign reissues such as the just mentioned Japanese LP, with its additional tracks and its deceptive title (a title so different from its original American counterpart that it would be easy to mistake it for a compilation). See also a related 2000 British release titled Rendezvous With Peggy Lee, listed under Anthological Albums, itemized in the lower half of this page, .

Album 2
BLACK COFFEE WITH PEGGY LEE

Release & Recording Notes

Recorded for the Decca label over three sessions held in April and May 1953. Originally released in August 1953 as a 10-inch LP (Decca DL 5482).

Original Tracks

1. Black Coffee / 2. I’ve Got You Under My Skin / 3. Easy Living / 4. My Heart Belongs To Daddy (A side)

5. A Woman Alone With The Blues / 6. I Didn’t Know What Time It Was / 7. When The World Was Young / 8. Love Me Or Leave Me (B side)

Reissue Notes

Reissued in August 1956 as a monaural 12-inch LP (Decca DL 8358), with four additional tracks, all of them recorded on April 3, 1956:

9. It Ain’t Necessarily So
10. Gee, Baby, Ain’t I Good to You?
11. You’re My Thrill
12. There’s a Small Hotel

Two additional masters recorded at this April 3, 1956 date ("Do I Love You?," "Guess I'll Go Back Home Next Summer") have yet to be incorporated to any official album reissues.

Additional Reissue Notes

In Brazil, the 10-inch LP edition of Black Coffee With Peggy Lee was issued around 1954 under a different title -- namely, Peggy Lee Canta para Você ... (Decca LTS-23.016). In the United States, one of Decca's branches issued a LP titled Crazy in the Heart (Vocalion VL 7 3903). Released in March 1970, that budget LP contains a total of 10 tracks, out of which seven were culled from Black Coffee with Peggy Lee. (The source for the remaining tracks was another original Lee album, Miss Wonderful.) While all known USA copies of Crazy in the Heart are in simulated stereo, a monaural alternative was definitely released in other countries.

Album 3
PEGGY - SONGS IN AN INTIMATE STYLE

Release & Recording Notes

All tracks recorded in September 1953 except for #2 (November 1952), 6 and 7 (both February 1953). Originally released in August 1954 as a 10-inch LP (Decca DL 5539). Monaural.

Original Tracks

1. Baubles, Bangles And Beads / 2. That’s Him Over There / 3. The Tavern / 4. Apples, Peaches And Cherries (A side)

5. That’s What A Woman Is For / 6. Where Can I Go Without You?* / 7. How Strange* / 8. Love You So (B side)

Reissue Notes

As of early 2022, this album has been digitally available only as a 1999 premium Japanese CD reissue, exclusively offered to buyers of a 20-CD set titled Universal Female Vocal Collection.

Additional Reissue Notes

Issued under the title Peggy Lee Canta e suas Interpretaçoes (Decca LTN-54) in Brazil. No twelve-inch LP version of this album was ever released.

Album 4
SONGS FROM WALT DISNEY'S LADY AND THE TRAMP

Release & Recording Notes

Recorded in December 1954 and released in March 1955 as a 10-inch LP (Decca DL 5557). All numbers by Peggy Lee except for an instrumental by conductor Oliver Wallace with the Disney Studio Orchestra (#3) and two vocals by cast members of the titular Disney movie (#8, 9).

Original Tracks

10. Jim Dear* / 11. Old Trusty* (featuring Sonny Burke)
12. Singing ('Cause He Wants To Sing)* / 13. That Fellow’s A Friend Of Man*

Additional Reissue Notes

Besides the customary Decca editions of the LP for the Australian, Brazilian and Japanese markets (among others), there is a 1975 UK reissue of this album on Buena Vista Records (a Disney branch), in electronically processed stereo (BVS 2C 5008s). As of early 2022, this album has never been digitally available. However, all the Peggy Lee vocals in it have made appearances on her Decca CD anthologies. (There are also Disney CD editions of the movie's actual soundtrack. Some of those Disney editions feature Lee singing the three above-listed numbers which she interprets in the soundtrack: #5, 6, 7. Please note that, during the LP era, Disney and its branches also issued several albums with those three numbers sung by other vocalists, yet erroneously crediting Lee as the singer.)

Album 5
SONGS FROM PETE KELLY'S BLUES

Release & Recording Notes

Originally released in July 1955 as Decca DL 8166. All numbers interpreted by Peggy Lee except for three tracks, sung by Ella Fitzgerald (#8, 9, 12). Lee vocals recorded in May 1955. Monaural.

Reissued in December 1966 as So Blue (Vocalion VL 3776), with three of the original tracks dropped (#2, 4, 6) and one track added ("The Night Holds No Fear for the Lover," recorded in September 1953), for a total of ten tracks. That Vocalion LP was in turn reissued in April 1984 as Peggy Lee (Coral CR 20187), with yet one more original track dropped (#12), for a total of nine tracks.

Album 7
THE MAN I LOVE

Release & Recording Notes

Recorded for the Capitol label in April 1957 and originally released in July 1957 as Capitol T-864. Monaural only. (Music industry insiders have claimed that stereophonic masters lie unreleased in the vaults. Though voiced by reliable witnesses, those claims have yet to be proven.)

In the US, Capitol also reissued it in 1970 as The Folks Who Live on the Hill (Capitol DF-518), with two of the original tracks dropped (#4, 8) and in simulated stereo. Yet another 1970 pseudo-stereo reissue was pressed across the pond by the EMI-owned World Record Club (The Man I Love, catalogue number ST 925, all 12 tracks).

Reissued by EMI's Music for Pleasure in 1970 in stereo, as The Song Is You in the United Kingdom (MFP 1358), and as Peggy Lee (MFP 5092) in several other countries, including the Netherlands and South Africa.

Album 9
SEA SHELLS

Release & Recording Notes

Recorded in February and March 1955 but not released until June 1958, as Decca DL 8591. Monaural. Of the 16 tracks, 12 are vocals or recitations performed by Peggy Lee. The other four (#4, 6, 11, 13) are instrumentals by harpist Stella Castellucci, some of them with supplementary harpsichord accompaniment from Gene DiNovi.

Peggy Lee considered this album to be unfinished. Hence she was surprised when Decca belatedly released it without having consulted her. (At the time of the release, she was no longer under contract with Decca.) In an interview for the BBC, the artist succinctly said that she would have liked to make "little changes."

Original Tracks

1. Sea Fever / 2. Nine Thorny Thickets / 3. Little Old Car* / 4. Greensleeves / 5. Chinese Love Poems: The Fisherman, Autumn Evening / 6. The Happy Monks* / 7. The White Birch And The Sycamore* / 8. Of Such Is The Kingdom Of God (A side)

Release & Recording Notes

Recorded for the Decca label in January and June 1956 but not released until either December 1958 or January 1959, as Decca DL 8816. Monaural.

Original Tracks

1. Mr. Wonderful / 2. They Can’t Take That Away From Me / 3. Where Flamingos Fly / 4. You’ve Got To See Mamma Every Night / 5. The Come Back / 6. Take A Little Time To Smile* (A side)

Reissue Notes

This LP's British edition (Brunswick 8287) does not include track #8 above. The edition replaces "Joey, Joey, Joey" with "Wrong, Wrong, Wrong," a Lee interpretation that had not yet been made available in the UK in 1959, although it had been recently issued on a Decca single in the US (1958).

Album 13
BEAUTY AND THE BEAT!

Release & Recording Notes

Recorded either on the last day of May or otherwise in early June 1959. Originally released in July 1959 as Capitol (S)T-1219. All selections are Peggy Lee vocals with the George Shearing Quintet except for three tracks (#5, 6, 12) which are instrumentals by the quintet's members.

This album is a studio recreation of the originally intended release: a May 30, 1959 concert at the Americana Hotel in Miami. Capitol's engineers taped that concert, but deemed their sound quality too poor for release. (One Lee concert vocal, having survived in exceptionally good condition, was issued as part of a 2003 British CD anthology titled Best of the Singles Collection, itemized further down below.)

13. Happy Holiday / 14. Winter Wonderland / 15. The Little Drummer Boy

Additional Reissue Notes

Since the advent of the CD era, a variety of holiday-Lee anthologies have been issued, all of them culling tracks from Christmas Carousel. Some have also offered performances from other labels (Decca) or media (radio). At the time of this writing (early 2022), the latest and best of such anthologies is Ultimate Christmas, released by Universal Music in September 2020 as both a downloadable music file and a streaming file, as well as on LP (B 0032274 1) and CD (B 0032274 2). Of the 15 Capitol tracks listed above, 13 are included in Ultimate Christmas (# 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15). The other numbers in the 21-track anthology are the two sides of an earlier Capitol single (14. Song At Midnight / 15. The Christmas Spell), a trio oh holiday recordings on Decca (16. Peace On Earth* / 17. Ring Those Christmas Bells / 18. It's Christmas Time Again), duet performances from Bing Crosby radio shows (19. Here Comes Santa Claus / 20. Little Jack Frost, Get Lost), and one concert vocal originally on Capitol (21. Here's To You*). As a bonus track of sorts, the physical editions (LP, CD) also include a number co-written and sung by Lee in the early 1980s (22. My Dear Acquaintance*).

Album 18
BASIN STREET EAST PROUDLY PRESENTS MISS PEGGY LEE

Release & Recording Notes

Recorded live at the Basin Street East nightclub (NY) in February 1961, and at a Capitol studio in March 1961. Originally released in March 1961 as Capitol (S)T-1520. About half of the tracks are from the concert tapes. The decision to record the other half in the studio -- most notably, the slow-paced ballads -- was made due to a combination of adverse factors (i.e., the sound-quality problems typically faced at club venues, and a bad cold that the singer was nursing at the time). Tracks #7 and 13 are instrumentals, though a spoken goodbye from Lee is subsumed in the latter.

Original Tracks

1. Day In, Day Out / 2. Moments Like This / 3. Fever / 4. The Second Time Around / 5. Medley: One Kiss - My Romance - The Vagabond King Waltz / 6. I Got A Man / 7. Peggy Lee's Bow Music (A side)

8. I Love Being Here With You* / 9. But Beautiful / 10. Them There Eyes / 11. Just For A Thrill (A Tribute To Ray Charles) / 12. Yes Indeed (A Tribute To Ray Charles) / 13. Peggy Lee Bow Music (B side)

PEGGY LEE'S GREATEST

Release & Recording Notes

Originally released by Camay Records in December 1962 as CA-3003. Contains audio taken from music videos taped by Peggy Lee for the company Snader Telescriptions in September 1950.

Original Tracks

1. I Only Have Eyes For You / 2. I May Be Wrong / 3. While We're Young / 4. I Cover The Waterfront / 5. I Don’t Know Enough About You* (A side)

6. Mañana* / 7. What More Can A Woman Do* / 8. It's A Good Day* / 9. You Was Right Baby*⋆ / 10. Why Don't You Do Right (B side)

Reissue Notes

Reissued by Camay in abbreviated form (eight tracks, missing #1, 4) around 1964, and again around 1965 -- on that last occasion, under the shortened title of Peggy Lee. Suffering from wretched sound quality and having a murky licensing background, the legality of all three iterations of this LP release was in contention in the mid-1960s, when a joint lawsuit against the Camay company was filed by Peggy Lee herself and the Nat King Cole estate. However, Camay alleged to have properly licensed the material from the holders of the Snaders catalogue.

Album 32
TWO SHOWS NIGHTLY

Release & Recording Notes

Taped live in April 1968 at the Copacabana nightclub (NY), a venue which vintage record engineers frequently characterized as problematic and unsatisfactory for optimal recording. Facing poor sound quality challenges in a few spots, some inserts were made later in the studio. Voiceovers were also belatedly conceived, taped, and incorporated in the studio.

Scheduled to be released in November 1968 as Capitol ST-105. Withdrawn from the US market immediately upon its initial release, as Peggy Lee felt that some tracks still suffered from flawed sound reproduction.

Original Tracks

1. Do I Hear A Waltz? / 2. By The Time I Get To Phoenix / 3. Reason To Believe / 4. Didn’t Want To Have To Do It / 5. My Personal Property / 6. Hand On The Plow (A side)

7. Until It’s Time For You To Go / 8. Something Stupid / 9. What Is A Woman? / 10. Alright, Okay, You Win / 11. Here’s To You* / 12. Come Back To M (B side)

Reissue Notes

Though quickly withdrawn in the US and not issued in the UK, this original album was still released in small-pressing quantities in other nations (Australia, Japan, New Zealand), as par for the course when it came to Lee's Capitol LPs.

Until the album's appearance on CD, the only LP issues in circulation were such non-American copies, along with American remainders. Dropped by Capitol at charity organizations and other suitable facilities, the remainders typically exhibited the word "free," punched on the upper-top right side of the front cover.

The CD era brought bright news for the album: it was properly remastered and reissued on compact disc in 2009. Had she still been with us then, Miss Lee would have probably marveled at the improved sound quality of that CD edition.

It is also worth pointing out here that Peggy Lee waxed vocals for three radio transcription services. This release offers her output for just one of those services. Although her work for the other two transcription companies (MacGregor, World) has been commercially issued in the past, as of early 2022 it has yet to appear in a high-quality, properly remastered and annotated package comparable to this Mosaic set. (Peggy Lee Associates LLC hopes to be able to release such a World-MacGregor music set in the future.)

Reissue Notes

Peggy Lee's incursions into the realm of radio were extensive. Besides numerous guest appearances on other artists' shows, her vast amount of radio material includes three series which she hosted or co-hosted in the 1940s (Rhapsody In Rhythm, The Summer Electric Hour, Chesterfield Supper Club). The tracks in Something Wonderful and At Last were culled from two more series that she hosted in the early 1950s, and from which plenty of additional Lee performances still remain unissued. All that material awaits collection, licensing, remastering and release through proper, Peggy Lee estate-sanctioned channels.

ANTHOLOGICAL ALBUMS
(1948-2020)

The second half of this page focuses on Peggy Lee's official American and British anthologies. All 68 qualifying anthologies have been sequenced chronologically, by year of release. In the tracks listings, songs written or cowritten by Peggy Lee have been identified with an asterisk.

An anthological album is understood to consist of previously issued numbers -- as opposed to original albums, which offer a program of mostly newly released numbers. As for the term "official," it refers to commercial issues released by (or licensed from) the companies which own Lee's music masters.

Album 55
BENNY GOODMAN AND HIS ORCHESTRA AND SEXTET; VOCALS BY PEGGY LEE

Release & Recording Notes

Originally released in August 1948 as a 78-rpm album (Columbia Set C-170) consisting of four discs (#38280 to #38283). All tracks had been previously available as 78-rpm singles, and all numbers dated back to Peggy Lee's period of recording activity with Benny Goodman (1941-1942).

Tracks

1. My Little Cousin / 2. Not Mine (first disc)

3. Let's Do It / 4. Where Or When (second disc)

5. On The Sunny Side Of The Street / 6. The Way You Look Tonight (third disc)

7. Winter Weather (duet with Art London) / 8. Somebody Nobody Loves (fourth disc)

Reissue Notes

Reissued in 1949 as a ten-inch LP (Columbia CL 6033) and as an EP set (B-406).

Additional Reissue Notes

An even earlier Goodman-Lee anthology had been once scheduled by Columbia, but plans for its 1947 release in the USA were abandoned when Goodman left the label. To be titled Benny's Best; All Time Favorites By Benny Goodman And His Orchestra (C 122), half of its eight scheduled cuts featured Peggy Lee on vocals. (The company's Canadian branch did issue the album, as Columbia A52.)

Album 56
MY BEST TO YOU

Release Notes

Released in April or May 1950 as a ten-inch LP (Capitol H-204). Six of these tracks would also be included in the 1955 edition of the original album Rendezvous with Peggy Lee (12" LP format). The other two tracks (#4, 6) had been out on 78-rpm singles.

Tracks

1. It’s A Good Day* / 2. Hold Me / 3. Mañana* / 4. A Nightingale Can Sing The Blues (A side)

5. Golden Earrings / 6. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot / 7. While We’re Young / 8. Why Don’t You Do Right (B side)

Additional Notes

The present inventory does not discuss EPs or 45 albums. However, it is worth making an exception in this case, to clarify that the 45-rpm box version of My Best to You (CCF-204) atypically features less tracks than its ten-inch LP counterpart. The tracks omitted from that boxed set were #4 and 7.

An Autobiography
MISS PEGGY LEE

Part of a much larger project, this page is essentially an addendum to the latest book edition of Miss Peggy Lee: An Autobiography, published by Peggy Lee Associates LLC in May of 2022. Included in that 2022 edition is not only Lee's own autobiographical narrative but also supplementary documentation of interest to her fans, such as a four-part discography. The main part of the discography lists all the masters recorded by the singer. Another part offers recommendations to prospective Lee listeners. Both of those parts are to be found in the book itself, as expected. Such is not the case, however, for parts three and four. Those are instead freely available as online pages, one of them being the page currently in view. To see the other one (an inventory of Lee's singles), click here.
